It’s no bizarre that just like humans, pets do require intense care post-surgery. The wounds are quite fresh and likely to easily get infected when proper care is not given. Therefore, the whole responsibility lies on you and your family at home to support and care them during recovery period making them feel comfortable and warm. During surgery, your pet may be given different medications including general anesthetic or sedative. They may have been given pain relief after surgery to lower any soreness, particularly for sterilizations. However, pet parents may be having concern about certain things and may be confused whether certain post-surgery symptoms are normal or not. Post-Surgery Period – What is Normal – What is Not? Caring For Your Pet After Surgery Pet Feels Sleepy This is usually normal after a surgery. It happens due to general anesthetic and sedative, which takes hours to wear off its effectiveness. Though the patience is recovering and awake, in some cases, they appear drowsy for a day or two. Over the following day or two they come back to the normal state. Feeding Pet at Surgery Night Certain medications develop nausea like condition in patient. So, your pet may feel off color and do not like to take anything. When forced they may throw out. Therefore, normally it is recommended no to feed the patient. If your furry pal seems to be in a good state and searching for food, then you can provide small quantity of food unless or otherwise it is advised by your vet. Ensure to provide plenty of water, whereas meal can be returned to normal the day after surgery unless specified by your vet. Licking or Chewing the Sutures When pets have stitches they are likely to chew or lick them causing harm and in some cases infection. If your pet shows the signs, there are bitterant solutions available in the market which need to be applied only after your vet’s advice. Or ask your vet to suggest any bandage or solution to avoid licking. Caring for the Wound During recovery period (around 10-14 hours after surgery) check the wound twice a day to ensure that it is dry and clean. Not only that, you need to also look for any signs of infection, discharge, odor, irritation, swelling, heat or self-inflicted damage. If the wound on your pet need to be bandaged, then ensure that it does not get wet or soiled with dirt. Suppose your pet has to go outside at any time, cover the bandage with a plastic bag and secure it in place and tape it. In case of insertion for draining into surgery site, don’t worry if there is some discharge/ooze over the next couple of days. This has been placed specifically for discharge of fluid away from the surgery site. This is normal and it is done to prevent the drain from clogging it, and it is good to clean the drain twice a day with warm, slightly salty water – never use soap for this cleaning purpose.
