The animal kingdom consists of some of the most interesting and mind-boggling species ever created by the almighty. Their supreme abilities are more than capable of putting mere mortals like you and me to shame. However, despite the glorious facets to their character, there are also certain embarrassing and bizarre activities which they undergo in their daily lives worth reading and knowing about. Let’s consider the example of parasites like Fleas and Ticks. Fleas and ticks are one of the most unpopular creatures to ever exist on the face of this earth. They suck blood and nutrients from the bodies of our furry friends leaving them in a lifeless state due to anaemia. However, it is important to understand them better in order to negotiate the threat faced from them effectively. Let’s take a look at certain bizarre facts about fleas and ticks which are bound to make one feel disgusted- Ticks use a glue-like substance to attach themselves to their victim Ticks attach themselves to the bodies of our poor furry friends through secretion of glue like solution called cementum which is oozed from their mouths. The glue helps them cling on to the bodies of the victims as well as suck blood constantly. Not only this, they are extremely tough to detect as their saliva contains compounds capable of numbing the skin, making it easy to continue sucking blood from the victim’s body unnoticed. Flea Larvae consume faeces by adult fleas as their primary source of food Flea larvae are dependent on consumption of faeces excreted by the adult fleas for developing into adults themselves. The faeces is commonly referred to as flea dirt. Flea dirt represents their primary source of nutrition and they feed upon the substance constantly for regular growth. Flea dirt basically comprises of blood sucked from the body of the hosts which is not digested by the adult flea. The overall process involves very limited digestion by the flea larvae. Adults usually consume blood from the victim in large quantities resulting in the undigested blood being excreted. Male ticks die directly after mating Mating represents the last stage in the life cycle of a male tick. An adult flea perishes directly after mating with a female flea although a certain set of fleas do go on to survive for a few more months. Female fleas, on the other hand, perish soon after laying their eggs which are usually numbered in thousands in a protected environment. The London Museum of Natural History has recognized the contribution of fleas to history through flea souvenirs The London Museum of Natural History has created 19th century Mexico based flea souvenirs which are actually dressed in the form of a drummer boy, a couple being wed as well as a woodcutter. The figures have tiny flea-like faces rather than of humans with the dresses created using paper as well. There are also several customer reviews of such souvenirs based on fleas in a museum being extremely bizarre and baffling in nature.
