Ingredients Fipronil & (s)-methoprene Manufacturer Merial / Boehringer Ingelheim Is your dog suddenly not eating? Denying his favorite treats? Well, this kind of sudden change in behavior doesn’t occur without any reason. If your dog generally loves to eat and now he’s not even touching the food, there must be some health issue or behavioral change behind it. When a dog that has less appetite doesn’t eat his food, it is acceptable. However, if your dog devours all his meals and has now suddenly stopped eating, that is a matter of concern.
No one can survive without food for a long amount of time. Even dogs require sufficient nutrition and minerals to function properly. So, when your dog doesn’t eat his food, some action should be taken. Before you judge your dog or take him to the vet, try to find out the cause behind such behavior. Is it some illness, behavioral issue, or something else? Well, there are plenty of reasons and in this blog, we’re going to discuss the main causes of loss of appetite in dogs. New Surroundings If you have recently moved to a new place, it could be the reason why your dog isn’t eating like he used to. Many dogs get nervous in strange or unfamiliar surroundings which then bring out unusual behavior in them. If your furry pal isn’t eating because of this reason, it’s very easy to tackle the situation. Just get his old toys and clothes and keep them where he sleeps. This way, he won’t feel homesick and will get back to his old self. Health Issue Just like we feel uneasy while having stomachache or headache, dogs also go through the same feelings. The dog might prefer to stay away from food if he’s having any stomach pain or any other health issues. The pain in any body area distracts the pet and doesn’t let him do his day to day activities. Hence, whenever such a situation occurs, take a look at your pet’s body to see if there’s anything concerning. Behavioral Issues Some dogs are naturally picky eaters. It requires a lot of effort and patience to make such dogs to eat. When a dog develops a habit of eating table scraps and other human food, it becomes very difficult to make him eat dog food. It is the result of over pampering a dog and pet parents have to deal with it whether they want or not. Any Vaccination There are many vaccinations that have slight side effects and cause loss of appetite in dogs. Here, you need to be patient and wait for the side effects to wear off. In a short amount of time, the dog will get his appetite back. Therefore, after giving him any kind of vaccination, remember that there will be a change in his appetite. Check the Food We tend to change dog food or get the same one from a different brand. We don’t see any difference in it but dogs can easily recognize the change in the taste of the food. So, prefer not to make many variations in your dog’s food. In addition, it is possible that the dog consumed stale food once and then stopped eating altogether. Therefore, pet parents should also keep these points in mind while feeding their dogs. It’s not difficult to figure out why your furry companion isn’t eating; you just need to pay heed to his behavior. So, now if you find your dog making a fuss while you’re trying to feed him, you know what you’ve got to do! Getting infected by heartworm can be daunting. Just one infected mosquito bite can put your pet’s health in jeopardy. When we talk about diseases in pets, heartworm specifically, there are many myths surrounding it. Heartworm disease can have grievous consequences if left untreated. So, instead of listening to myths, one should make a rational decision in order to prevent heartworm disease in their pet. Heartworm disease is caused by a mosquito that has been infected by heartworm. When the infected mosquito bites a dog, it transmits the infective larvae to the dog. If the dog is not protected, the larvae will reach adult stage and cause damage to dog’s lungs and heart. Below we have discussed the most common myths about heartworm disease and have provided facts to spread awareness about it. Myth# Heartworm Disease Can Spread Only In Warm Climate Fact: It’s a known fact that summertime is “mosquito season” and many believe that their dogs won’t get infected in winters. Mosquitoes are prevalent during summer but there are some species which are present throughout the year. Dogs can be an easy target during the winters too, so always ensure that you’re using preventives even when the temperature is not high. Myth# Only Dogs Get Infected By Heartworm Disease Fact: It’s true that dogs are at the highest risk of getting infected by heartworms, but cats and ferrets are also vulnerable to this disease. Cats are not 100% safe from heartworms. If they are exposed to infective larvae, they too can be infected. Normally in cats, heartworms die before they reach maturity; hence cats have lesser chances of getting infected. There are very few treatments available for heartworms in cats, so the sensible choice would be to use a preventive. Myth# Indoor Pets Don’t Get Infected By Heartworms Fact: Even if your pet spends their entire time inside the house, there are still chances of them getting infected during a quick walk. Mosquitoes can also enter the house through your open door or windows. No place is safe from mosquitoes and that’s why you need to be cautious about the health of your pet. Myth# Irregularity in Administering Heartworm Preventives Is Okay Fact: You must be thinking that it’s fine to miss one dose during winter. This makes your dog vulnerable to infections during that period and there’s a higher possibility that he can get infected. If you miss a dose and your dog gets bitten, the heartworm larvae present in his body will reach maturity in 6-7 months. Then the only option would be to treat the disease, the process of which is extremely complex and expensive. If you are concerned that you might forget monthly doses, injections are available that can be given twice a year. Myth# It’s A Contagious Disease Fact: Many people seem to think that heartworm disease is contagious. It doesn’t work like flu and your dog won’t get infected if he comes in contact with another dog that has the disease. It can only be transmitted though mosquito bites. The mosquitoes obtain the heartworm larvae from other animals like infected coyotes, dogs, foxes, etc. Then they spread the disease to other animals. Therefore, you can let your dog play with other pets without worrying about heartworm disease. Myth# Heartworm Prevention Is Expensive Fact: Studies have shown that the cost of heartworm treatment is 10 times more than the year-round preventives. The preventives cost is very less if you compare it to the treatment of the disease. Moreover, the infection affects lungs and heart so it may also cause a permanent damage to your pet’s health. This is the reason it’s crucial to use preventives on your dog during the year. Heartgard Plus Chew-able is one of the products that provide protection against heartworm disease. Majority of people avoid preventive treatment because they’ve read or heard some myth about heartworms and that ignorance can put a pet’s life in danger. Heartworm prevention is very convenient and there are many options available. Using heartworm preventive will protect your dog from this fatal disease and it will save you from spending a fortune on treatments. The role of a vet is extremely important in the lives of your pets. They are like the guiding light that every pet parent seeks whenever they require assistance regarding their furry pals. But unfortunately, majority of the pet parents across the globe only visit the vet when their pets are ill, which by the way, shouldn’t be the case at all. Regular vet visits are important, and the role of a vet is too. Keeping that thought in mind, let us dig deeper and excavate the importance of a vet in your pet’s lives.
Role of a Vet In layman terms, a vet is like a human doctor, but for pets. They oversee, give advice, help you take good care of your pet, and much more. Let’s look at the many roles a vet plays in the lives of your pet. 1. Checks for Problems When you take your pet to the vet, suspecting issues with his health, the vet will first examine your pet. He will thoroughly examine and check your pet for problems. What the exact problem your pet is facing can only be detected by a vet. Without a vet, it becomes difficult to detect the cause or the actual problem. 2. Gives You Solutions to Your Pet’s Problems Once the vet detects the exact issue, he will provide you with the solution. What treatments and procedures to follow, all will be given to you by your vet. For instance, your pet has fleas and ticks. The vet, after proper examination, will give you the most suitable flea and tick treatments for your pet. 3. Helps You Gain Knowledge You can also gain a lot of knowledge about pets in general and how to properly take care of your pet by just engaging in a conversation with him. You can also gain more pet knowledge by observing the vet while he examines and treats your four-legged friend. Importance of a Vet On Pets That was the role of a vet towards your fur buddies. Now, let us look at the importance of going for regular vet visits. 1. Keeps Your Pet Healthy Regular visits to the vet help in keeping your pet healthy. The routine visits will only bear fruits in the long run. Down the road, when you look back, remembering all the vet visits, it will surely make you breathe a sigh of relief. 2. Prevents Fatal Diseases Another massive reason why visiting the vet regularly is important is because it helps prevent fatal diseases. If diseases are detected early (this only happens because of regular visits to the vet), it will cure it at its infant stage, which is any day better than getting to know about it when it is too late. 3. Saves You the Big Bucks The saying “a stitch in time saves nine” fits in perfectly here. If you spend money on the vet now, you will prevent spending more (on expensive treatments) in the future. Thus, keeping this in mind, you should take your pet to the vet frequently. A vet plays a key role in the lives of your pet, and though they don’t receive the credit and appreciation they deserve, they continue to save millions of pet’s lives. They are certainly the silent performers, and credit must be given where it is due. THANK YOU, VETS. Dogs normally shed hair and may also have patchy coats due to the changing season. However, Alopecia in dogs is very noticeable as it refers to dogs refers to hair loss. The partial or complete hair loss in dogs can be seen in them due to allergies, skin infections caused due to flea or tick bite or because of endocrine disorders. The condition for Alopecia can occur on its own or some time has no causes at all or it can be often a symptom of other underlying issues.
Symptoms of Alopecia in DogsAlopecia in dogs can be caused due to the disease or other underlying conditions. The symptoms of Alopecia can vary from case to case. However, if your dog is suffering from hair loss these are the potential symptoms that you may clearly observe in your dog.
Dog parents have long suspected that their pets will sense what they’re feeling.
And now, even the researcher’s studies are also backing it up. Dog parents have long believed their pets will develop on their feelings. However, this was simply a theory until recently. Due to animal behavior specialists, it is once and for all proved that our canine companions are in fact masters, once it involves sensing human emotions. Dogs are extremely social creatures, and they like to meet new people and go on a ride. They love to be in tightly knit family teams and have a robust instinct once it involves protecting and being loyal to their social circles. Moreover, like you, your furry pooch too can use a fancy series of visual communication, facial expressions, and vocalizations to speak with alternative members of their species. Therefore, it’s no surprise, then, that once early dogs and humans began interacting, our four-legged counterparts were able to hone in on their ability to anticipate our thoughts and feelings. In reward for this intuitive bond, dogs got a lot of opportunities to receive food, shelter, and feelings that humans offer. Dogs invest an extra amount of time in observing you and therefore, it’s no surprise that they’ve learned to identify the emotional cues concerning how you tend to feel—especially, a decent mood will mean further leisure time and cuddles, whereas a nasty mood could be a smart reason for your Fido to look for a cover. Dogs use more than just seeing to figure out what you are feeling, though. Along with their astounding sense of hearing, your pet simply picks the tone of your voice to sense what you’re going through emotionally. Surprisingly, dogs can also use their sense of smell to gauge on some emotions, like concern or sicknesses, which may show up as chemical changes within the breath or sweat. In an experiment by researchers at the University of Lincoln and the University of Sao Paulo, a team of animal behavior specialists and psychologists conferred seventeen untrained and domesticated dogs with pictures and sounds that meant either positive or negative emotional expressions in each human and dogs. They discovered that dogs spent much longer staring at the facial expressions that matched with the emotion of the vocalization, whether or not the topic was human or canine. This proof proves the fact that many dog parents, including you, knew that dogs can understand what you feel by listening, watching, and smelling. This is the reason why dogs have created a special space in human hearts. So, if your four-legged friend feels what you're feeling, you’re bound to share a robust bond. Guests coming in from the main door and before you can greet them, you see that your dog has already started the ritual by jumping on or barking at them. Some guests love this behavior while others frown. Although, as an ardent pet parent and lover, you would not like those guests that frown at such love-filled gestures of your pooch they are your guests and it becomes your duty to ensure that they don’t feel uncomfortable.
So, before teaching your dog to “behave” (although they are behaving because greeting and showering love is the kind of thing that currently this world needs) you should know what must be going through their mind when they bark or jump or lick the guests. Here's What Your Dog Is Thinking: Someone is behind the door, and just when they cross the door that is the time your dog’s threshold is also crossed. Your pup gets hyperactive and excited to see new people they want to know more about them by licking or smelling and interacting with them they want their attention. Moreover, the dogs are really possessive of their space so if anyone comes in they would surely want to inspect them and make sure they are friendly and mean no harm. Of Course, Since You Don’t Want To Trouble Your Guests, This Is What You Want Your Pooch To Do or Think-“There’s someone at the door and yeah I should let them come in and should not block their way. My parents seem okay with them and I also should. They will come to me to greet me and if they won’t its okay it’s their loss.” This sounds significantly impossible – But here’s a process that may help you to train your pups to be calm at these situations. The Process:
Cats are naturally clean animals and thus, when they poop, they like to hide it and run from the place as far as possible. Some cat behaviorists associate this kind of attitude of a cat to their innate instinct to survive. However, the real reason for these zoomies is not completely deciphered. Some theories describe varied reasons for this inexplicable behavior which you would get to know as you read on. Health Issues Cats that have trouble pooping and experience painful poop time due to inflammation in the colon or anal fissures can get zoomies. It is a way of coping with the underlying medical problem. Survival Behavior Cats try to hide their poop and run to the farthest location in the wilds so that their predators don’t track them off through the distinct odor of their poop. The same way pet cats also get zoomies after they poop. Sense of Euphoria Waste elimination can be a pleasurable experience in cats as it stimulates the vagus nerve in the brain. This leads to a feeling of Euphoria post pooping. Sense of Independence In their early years, cats are usually used to having their hind region cleaned by their mothers. As they grow up, this activity comes to a halt and cats get a feeling of freedom. This elation makes them do zoomies. Cleaning Freaks Another possible reason for cat bolting is that she/he could be cleanliness freak and might be doing zoomies to shed the still attached fecal dirt. Should You Be Worried About Zoomies? Cat zooming behavior is completely normal. Zoomies help cats to burn extra energy. However, if your kitty is zooming around too frequently, you must get her more exercise. Play with your cat more to eliminate those energy bursts. If zoomies are too frequent, it is recommended to consult your vet as the pet experiencing it may be suffering from an underlying health condition. Also, note that at times cats experience zoomies due to flea bites or certain skin allergies. So, it is better to keep track of her health and treat your feline with appropriate preventives and pills. Another very plausible reason could be that your cat doesn’t like the unkempt litter box. Therefore, make sure her defecating zone is spick and span. With these tips, you can control the unexpected outburst of energy in cats but fret not if none of the causes matches the ones mentioned above as zoomies are very normal and may just be because of excess energy in your cat. Follow the tips mentioned and your cat will calm down. What if on a relaxing Sunday you are bathing your dog and suddenly spot tiny brown and black dots on him? You might think it to be dirt until it jumps in your dog’s coat and you come to know that those are frisky fleas who have made home on your dog. Fleas and ticks are ubiquitous creatures. Therefore, it is imperative for pet-parents to be vigilant about providing flea preventions in order to avoid their pet to suffer from flea and tick infestation and other flea and tick-borne diseases. These wingless bloodsuckers like to set up shop in a dog’s warm coat. And if you see one flea that means there can be many as they have four stages of development. Birds, what I consider are the luckiest creatures on the earth. They have wings, and they are free. And watching them makes me luckier. We used to live in Tucson city of Arizona; I was 14 years old when I started watching birds because of my grandfather. Sometimes, he used to wake me up early morning and take me with him to the historic sentinel peak. All dressed up and excited, on the way to the peak, he used to talk about each and every bird he has seen, grey hawk, Roadrunners, elegant trogon and many others that I don’t even remember. I used to get irritated by listening to the same things, twice, thrice or sometimes four times a month. He used to say,” You know Edmund, this nature is our actual home, and we belong here…I belong here. Last time I came here I saw…” and what followed was a long recitation of the stories from his previous visits to the Sentinel. Though at that age I found his talks and those trips annoying as I grew up those words of my grandfather became more than just boring words. I was 25 when my grandfather died and left behind a backyard full of birds. It seemed strange but as he aged and stopped going to the mountain or lakes to see birds, we saw an increase in the number of birds coming to our backyard. He told me to fill the storeroom with all sorts of bird supplies and treatments so that he could feed them and take care of their health. After his death, I didn't know what to do with the birds that came to the backyard. Never wanted to take care of birds, I knew it was a good thing but who would take out time. Hence, I continued my life as an employee of a company got married at 30 and was planning to move to New York. While I had my plans, my destiny was busy making other plans for me. My cousins from Santa Fe visited me and forced me to take them to the Sentinel peak. I agreed and as we approached the peak all the memories of my grandfather and his stories began to flash in front of my eyes. We went to the ‘A’ and had a lot of fun but the memories of me and my grandfather started encircling my mind. I didn’t even realize when my eyes started searching for birds because that was what I did all the time whenever I stood on that peak. The smell in the air, the view and the overall environment made me nostalgic. Within a few minutes, I became disconnected with my cousins and their talks and got connected with the environs. I started looking for birds and even saw some hawks and to my surprise those moments delighted me. I went with my cousins but came back with grandfather and moist eyes. I decided that I can at least feed a few birds at my backyard as long as I am here. However, I didn’t stop there and became a bird watcher like my grandfather. Now, of course for the living, my weekdays are spent in the city but my weekends are “lived” in nature with birds. And recently, when my niece accompanied me while I was spending a weekend birding in the Agua Caliente Park, watching hummingbirds and songbirds like Orange-crowned Warblers, and Lazuli Buntings, she asked,” why do you love watching birds, what joy do you get?” I replied, “You know Alma, this nature is our actual home, and we belong here… I belong here.” Just felt like sharing my story with you guys hope this will be a good read. I want to urge people to become birdwatchers in their free time because it not only makes us aware of the wildlife conditions but also acts as a therapy that calms our brain and gets us connected to ourselves. Who doesn’t know this feline? She is the most famous name in the fashion world after her daddy Karl Lagerfeld who recently passed away this year. Karl Lagerfeld who is unanimously called the God of Fashion Industry after creating the High End Brands like Chanel and Fendi, had not just redefined urban fashion but was also a great dad to his Cat. In fact, Choupette is one cat whose insta account is beautifully curated showcasing the emotions, respect and bond that Karl shared with her. Choupette was just 3 when he brought her home from a friend who had to travel. It was then that Karl felt a deep bond between him and Choupette which eventually lead him to officially take the custody of his cat. In fact, Karl was such a devoted father to his cat that he took her to shootings, shows and after parties. Influenced by his own obsession for fashion, Karl also arranged modelling gigs for Choupette as well because he wanted her to leave a mark in the pet fashion world. Choupette is one lucky cat who has her own insta, twitter and facebook accounts. All thanks to her social media director whom Karl appointed to build a legacy of her own. Karl had admitted that he was in love with his cat. Unknowingly or knowingly he spoiled Choupette with lavish gifts and luxurious treatments owing to the ritzy life of the fashion GOD he himself celebrated. It was not just the superficial show off of affection that usually fashion world is inundated with but was more surreal and deep which only a few who knew Karl personally understood. Besides showering his cat with shrimp cake on her first birthday, he tried to make her life as perfect as it could be for a pet. Somehow, he drew his inspiration for life and fashion from the companionship he shared with Choupette. She filled the void in his life and became the driving force for becoming the best version of himself. Sharing this emotional bond with Karl for years now, the sudden commencement of looming fate has left Choupette shattered. The belongingness that she once felt from her daddy has now vanished but her managers are taking good care of her. Her love for her great father can be vividly seen through the blog entry that was made on her account. Each word in the blog post clearly revealed the respect she had for him and the separation she has to go through currently. Now that he is gone, Choupette is recovering from the loss and would be taken care of by the people he left behind for her. Fans may be wondering how she would get all the love and care that Karl showered on her once. But, since Choupette itself is a very beautiful cat who loves human company and is quite amicable with others, finding happiness in others won’t be that difficult. Also, she has a lot of media attention to handle through her social platform. Hopefully, Choupette will continue the legacy of her father and will create an altogether new world of pet fashion. This tremendously mesmerizing bond that both of them shared is a true inspiration to people who love their cats yet feel insecure about their relationship with her. This is also to all those people who miss their cats and feel they are one of the most beautiful creatures in the world. No matter how moody or demanding you find them, their unique sense of showing affection with eye kisses, head butts and leg rubs to their loved ones is inimitable to any other things in the world. So, peeps love your cat, give her space and trust her for how she is because she certainly loves you in her own subtle ways. The more you will treat her like the candy of your eye, the greater you will establish a firm bond with her. Make sure you spend quality time with your kitty to let her cherish each moment of her life and also give yourself a scope for transforming into a better person because pets do bring a good and positive change in life. A BOND OF A FATHER AND HIS DAUGHTER CAT TO REMEMBER!
Fleas are tiny blood-sucking ectoparasites that hop on to your cat’s body and start feeding on the blood of your furry cat causing irritated skin, skin infections, anemia, triggering itching in cats suffering from flea allergy dermatitis, and tapeworm infestation if ingested while grooming.
Once they infest your cat, they grow in an exponential rate because each adult flea produces around 2000 eggs at a time. However, the reality is something different. Fleas do survive and not only survive they thrive and reproduce during the winters given the safe haven of your house where the environment is perfect for them to breed, hatch, multiply and reproduce. WONDERING!!! How this is possible? This is absolutely possible due to the temperature inside your house is absolute for fleas to stay alive. Though it may be snowfall outside, inside your house it’s warm and little damp which is a perfect abode for fleas to breed and infest pets. How Do Fleas Survive in Harsh Temperatures? Some areas have bad flea problem and some has mild but it’s not possible to completely abate flea problem even during extreme temperatures. As per the anatomy of fleas, they need humidity and warm temperatures to survive. In a nutshell, winters are no exceptions for flea and tick infestations if you do not provide the protection. Therefore, keeping your furry pal on parasitic prevention program throughout the year is the full proof protocol. Once in a while, it’s always fun to take your furry feline for a car trip. It could be to the animal park or any other place. A car drive with your pal is a great way to relieve stress and spend more time with your little munchkin. Sometimes car trips can get a bit rusty and hence, some precautionary measures should be adopted before you set forth on a mini journey with your cute friend. Below are some safety car tips that every cat parent must consider before taking that fun-filled journey. Car Safety Tips For Your Cat Before you embark on a journey with your furry friend, make sure to utilize these car safety tips to ensure a smooth and joyous ride. #1. Comfort Is Key First things first, see whether or not your kitty is comfortable inside the car or not. If he’s a frequent car traveler, he’ll find his sweet spot in no time but if you’re taking your little ball of fur on a car ride for the very first time then give him some time to get used to the cat seats and all. It might take him a while so be patient with your pal. #2. Nicely Buckled Up? Once your pal gets nice and comfy, don’t forget to put his seatbelt on. Cats travelling for the very first time should be nicely buckled up to avoid the odd bumps and shakes that often occur while going on a road trip. Even if your cat is a regular car traveler, make sure to buckle him tightly (not too tightly). #3. Locked The Doors? After buckling up your buddy, check the door. Make sure you check them twice to see if they are properly locked. If they aren’t, then close them gently without slamming it. Some cats may develop a sense of fright if you intend on closing the car door with a bang. Hence, ensure you pull the door with ease. #4. Carrying Enough H2O? If you decided to go on a long road trip with your feline on a hot and sultry day then it is obvious to carry extra bottles of water. Long trips can tire and dehydrate your little pal and regular fluid intake such as water is very essential. Hence, do carry enough bottles of H2O because not only he (your cat), but you too will require lots of them. #5. Don’t Forget the Litter Bag? Going for a long car ride with your feline without a litter bag is not a great idea, isn’t it? Your kitty, especially a first-time car traveler is bound to feel dizzy and may require a place to vomit. That’s where a litter bag comes to the rescue. Hence, always carry litter bags whenever you’re going on a road trip with your pet. You know when you may require them. #6. Where’s The Food? There’s never a fixed time for food, right? Whenever you plan on long road trips, you do tend to feel hungry. So imagine how ravenous your pal would feel! Carrying food is something not mandatory because there’s the option of stopping at a restaurant to grab a bite. But that’s not always a safe option because you might be traveling overnight and might not find any restaurants open. Hence, to be on the safe side, it’s advisable to carry some food, especially for long trips. #7. Note the Climatic Changes One of the most important tips is to take note of the climatic conditions. For instance, if it’s very chilly outside and you plan on taking your cat on a car trip, make sure to put on his woolens for protection against the cool wintery breeze. Keeping these important pointers in mind is highly recommended. Thus, before you take that long road trip with your cute little pie, be sure to implement and follow these tips so that you and your pal can have a safe and joyful journey. Happy Riding! Pets are always the one who control the vibe of your house it’s time that you control the vibe of their health. Heartworm disease has been growing incessantly and unpredictably in all the states of the USA. Even after the umpteen efforts to control the menace with different methodologies and procedures, the initiatives are falling flat. If reports from American heartworm Society are to be believed, heartworms are gradually developing resistance against the ivermectin and milbemycin oxime that were approved as microfilariae preventing drugs by FDA in 1990. According to the investigation reports submitted to the FDA, the complaints connoted a troubling increase in heartworm incidences due to the resistance Dirofilaria immitis against these drugs. However, researchers still recommend continuing these preventatives as it is the only way available currently, to save the pets from unrecognized, impending dangers of the heartworm disease that is slowly gaining momentum. Even after constant efforts put forward to promote testing and prevention of heartworms, Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) revealed that there are still millions of canines in the USA that have not received any sort of protection yet. When the heartworm tests were performed in the southern states like Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, researchers found that the positive tests noted outnumbered the total number of tests conducted. This data has grown serious concern regarding the number of cases that will be surging in the coming years if the heartworm prevention is not taken seriously. Another study conducted by researchers specifically on the 18 animal shelters in the Mississippi counties revealed that shelter dogs living in poor conditions are at greater risk of developing the disease due to poor living conditions and higher chances of not receiving proper treatments compared to the ones owned by people. Declining immunity due to low-level care and obesity were some of the major causes of heartworm infections in these poor animals. Researchers inferred that people in all the states of the USA, especially southern areas require proper awareness regarding heartworm disease. Besides, the regions are also in dire need of an accurate detection and prevention management as well as treatment methodologies to combat the vicious ailment snaking up the health ladder of canines. Heartworm Disease - Preventive Ways
Little efforts count a lot while controlling a disease. So, make sure you try every possible way to prevent this menace.
https://www.heartwormsociety.org/newsroom/in-thenews/81-heartworm-preventive-resistance-is-it-possible http://news.vin.com/vinnews.aspx?articleId=28284 The most common issue among all pet owners is to get that perfect flea and tick treatment for their pets which can help them eradicate and control this major problem in one go. However, their struggle seems to be never-ending because of the failure of choosing the most suitable one for their pet amongst the gamut of products available in the market. Well, to be very honest, there are several factors on which the efficacy and suitability of the products depend. First is the ‘location’. If the area is heavily infested with fleas and ticks, a mild product won’t work and you would also require treating your house in addition. The health of the pet is another major factor that must be taken into consideration before purchasing the flea and tick treatment as a sensitive dog cannot be given a heavy dose, contrarily, a mild dose won’t work on a large dog. His lifestyle is another deciding factor while choosing the correct product.
This must have certainly bewildered you by now for sure. Well, if you are looking for an answer for which product will be an absolute best for your dog or cat, here is some insight about flea and tick products and their usage which will help you decide the best match for your pet’s lifestyle and the surroundings. Flea and Tick Topical Treatment Topical treatments are easy to apply on the skin and the added advantage of using these products is – owners don’t have to bother administering the treatment every single day. Reason being, topical treatments are usually monthly and one application works for complete 30 days. Additionally, they can be administered to puppies as well as to adult, large dogs. Flea and Tick Oral Treatment Oral treatments come in the form of pills, tablets or chews and must be administered directly or mixed with the pet’s food. These products are highly effective and the most trustworthy solution to fleas and ticks. Most importantly, one administration of this treatment can protect your pet for up to 3 months. Moreover, you don’t need to worry about the product getting rubbed by the pet on your furniture or other household items because they are oral and not topical solutions. Furthermore, chewable generally come in palatable flavors which pets take voluntarily, so chasing your pet to administer the product is also not required. Flea and Tick Shampoos And Sprays Sprays are very handy and quite helpful in combating mild fleas and tick infestation. Moreover, you can spray it at any time of the day. You can also bring household flea and tick protection spray and easily use it around the house to safeguard your pet from further infestation. Flea and tick shampoos, on the other hand, are great grooming products that may help remove flea dirt and parasite remains from your pet’s coat. They also kill eggs that may mature into adult parasites. Therefore, using a shampoo with such infestation-removing properties is a great way to eradicate fleas and ticks. Using it concurrently with the oral treatments may provide added protection. Flea and Tick Collar Flea and tick collars are extremely convenient to use. They just need to be tied around the pet’s neck to do their job. Collars like preventic and Kiltix contain parasite killing ingredients that diffuse into the skin when worn by the pet and hence repel fleas and ticks from infesting and biting the pet. People can easily use this product when they take their dog out on a walk to dog parks or often travel with them to other places. This product greatly prevents the pet from picking up an infestation from the outdoors. Now that we already know how effective all of these flea and tick products are, the fact to ponder over is – why doesn’t that topical or that chewable work on my pet? Well, we have already told you the efficacy of the treatment depends on various factors so let’s discuss how they affect the success of the product. Factors To Consider Before Deciding The Best Flea and Tick Treatment The method of use One must always check the usage of the product, whether it is oral or topical. This is important because oral tablets are supposed to be taken regularly whereas a topical solution lasts for complete one month. Age of the dog Pets that are younger than 7 weeks cannot be given oral treatment because they are heavy on the system. Such pets can only be treated with topical solutions until they are 14 weeks old whereas, you can easily go for an oral treatment if the dog is medium or large and an adult. Preference Your personal preference also comes into play while choosing any flea and tick treatment. Some may rather like to treat their pet with oral products simply because they are not messy while some other may prefer to have a topical solution that doesn’t require daily administration. So, the choice of product also somehow depends on the convenience of the pet owner as well. A few of you may rather chuck of topical from your list because your dog is restless and keeps rubbing the solution everywhere around the house. Some others may opt for topical because they run short of time. People with an uncontrollable pet may go for chews because the only thing their pet agrees to have is a beef flavored treat. So, different pets and different lifestyles also significantly affect the choice of treatment. Efficacy The intensity of flea and tick infestation may vary from pet to pet and so must the treatment. For instance, if the pet has a full-blown infestation then a topical may rather be less effective on him than the oral treatment whereas for a pet that has mild infestation he can be easily treated with a topical treatment. However, this doesn’t mean topical doesn’t work properly. Their efficacy completely depends on the intensity of the infestation. They can successfully treat mild parasitic infestation but for a heavy population of parasites, oral must be preferred. Price Pet supplies can be very expensive to afford thus the price of the treatment does matter when selecting the treatment. Normally, oral drugs are expensive compared to topical treatments whereas topical and collars cost almost the same, normally. Moreover, the price of the product also depends upon the brand of the product. A generic treatment is always a cheaper option than a branded drug. Conclusion Choice of a product thus completely depends on what will suit the best for your pet. You must meticulously consider all of these factors to make the perfect and most suitable choice for treating flea and tick infestation in your pet successfully. The animal kingdom consists of some of the most interesting and mind-boggling species ever created by the almighty. Their supreme abilities are more than capable of putting mere mortals like you and me to shame. However, despite the glorious facets to their character, there are also certain embarrassing and bizarre activities which they undergo in their daily lives worth reading and knowing about. Let’s consider the example of parasites like Fleas and Ticks. Fleas and ticks are one of the most unpopular creatures to ever exist on the face of this earth. They suck blood and nutrients from the bodies of our furry friends leaving them in a lifeless state due to anaemia. However, it is important to understand them better in order to negotiate the threat faced from them effectively. Let’s take a look at certain bizarre facts about fleas and ticks which are bound to make one feel disgusted- Ticks use a glue-like substance to attach themselves to their victim Ticks attach themselves to the bodies of our poor furry friends through secretion of glue like solution called cementum which is oozed from their mouths. The glue helps them cling on to the bodies of the victims as well as suck blood constantly. Not only this, they are extremely tough to detect as their saliva contains compounds capable of numbing the skin, making it easy to continue sucking blood from the victim’s body unnoticed. Flea Larvae consume faeces by adult fleas as their primary source of food Flea larvae are dependent on consumption of faeces excreted by the adult fleas for developing into adults themselves. The faeces is commonly referred to as flea dirt. Flea dirt represents their primary source of nutrition and they feed upon the substance constantly for regular growth. Flea dirt basically comprises of blood sucked from the body of the hosts which is not digested by the adult flea. The overall process involves very limited digestion by the flea larvae. Adults usually consume blood from the victim in large quantities resulting in the undigested blood being excreted. Male ticks die directly after mating Mating represents the last stage in the life cycle of a male tick. An adult flea perishes directly after mating with a female flea although a certain set of fleas do go on to survive for a few more months. Female fleas, on the other hand, perish soon after laying their eggs which are usually numbered in thousands in a protected environment. The London Museum of Natural History has recognized the contribution of fleas to history through flea souvenirs The London Museum of Natural History has created 19th century Mexico based flea souvenirs which are actually dressed in the form of a drummer boy, a couple being wed as well as a woodcutter. The figures have tiny flea-like faces rather than of humans with the dresses created using paper as well. There are also several customer reviews of such souvenirs based on fleas in a museum being extremely bizarre and baffling in nature.
